Schools & Young People

Text only page

Each year thousands of children and young people visit Nene Park. Many come with family and friends. More come on a visit organised by their school or as a member of a young people’s group, and some groups base themselves in the Park.

This section is aimed at those people thinking about making or organising a visit with a school or group. If you are simply looking for something for a young person to do, don’t forget all the activities in the “Things to do and see” section.

Many of them are suitable for or aimed at children and young people and many of the Clubs extend a particular welcome to them to try or join in their activities.

There are two rooms available for hire; both are located in the central area of Ferry Meadows.

The John Horrell Room at the Visitor Centre can easily accommodate an average sized class and is equipped with audio visual facilities including an induction loop for hearing aid wearers. (Food and drink may not be consumed in the Meeting Room).

The Resources Centre is smaller but makes an ideal study base for groups working in the park.

Two cafés in Ferry Meadows offer a range of light meals and drinks but cannot accommodate groups bringing their own refreshments. They would appreciate advance notice if you are intending to make use of them on your visit. The Visitor Centre has a display depicting the history and the wildlife of the park, the shop has range of gift items and souvenirs.

There are two adjoining lakeside campsites in Ferry Meadows specifically for groups. They are used by Schools, DoE Award groups, Scouts & Guides and other organised clubs, especially those wishing to participate in activities at the nearby Watersports Centre. Please contact the Visitor Services Officer for details and bookings.

Even if you require nothing from the Trust for your visit and do not wish to use any of the facilities, it is useful to know that a group is visiting. A telephone call or email to the Visitor Services Officer to let him know in advance of your visit would be appreciated.

Practical Matters
Wet weather shelter in the park is very limited and we do recommend that visiting groups advise their members of this so that they come prepared.

Sensible footwear and clothes appropriate to the weather are recommended.

Trust staff cannot supervise groups during their visit. Their safety and behaviour is the responsibility of the group leaders.

Water is a feature of Nene Park and of Ferry Meadows in particular. Care should be taken on and around the banks especially when the grass is wet.

Parties larger than 30 are unwieldy and so are very unlikely to see or hear much of the wildlife interest in the Park. Smaller groups that can move quietly and in good order are likely to do best.

We are always looking at ways of improving our facilities and services and welcome any suggestions you may have please email to visitor.services@neneparktrust.org.uk
