Autumn Colours

Now is a great time to visit Nene Park and enjoy the wonderful autumn colours as the leaves change colour.

But have you ever wondered why they change colour? It's all to do with the chemicals in the leaves. Chlorophyll is green in colour and dominates the other pigments so this is why leaves are green. In the autumn the chlorophyll content decreases day by day and this allows the other pigments to shine through.

Carotenoids are responsible for the yellow and orange colours while anthocyanins are responsible for the reds and purples.

So now you know the science it's time to get outdoors and enjoy the autumn!
