Overton Lake Shore Project

The aim of the Overton Lake Project is to create a more natural lake shore. The large boulders of limestone which were installed over ten years ago to prevent erosion do not allow vegetation to establish and do not support much wildlife.

A floating digger created a shelf which was then covered with an alternative type of bank protection in the form of coir pallets. Coir pallets are made from compressed coconut husks and are pre-planted with native waterside plants such as purple loosestrife and yellow flag iris.

Cages were then put in place to prevent geese from grazing on the plants until they become established at which point the cages can be removed leaving a more wildlife friendly lake shore.
