Pollarding at Ferry Meadows
Some of the willow trees on Short Meadow in Ferry Meadows have recently been pollarded. Pollarding is where trees are cut at a height where livestock are unable to browse off new growth. This encourages new growth and prolongs the life of the tree.
The willows on Short Meadow are on a cutting rotation which allows local thatchers Dodson Bros Ltd to harvest the material for thatching.
The new shoots which grow will provide new material for the next harvest in a few years time.
